Abstract

990,569. Inductors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1961 [July 7, 1960], No. 23761/60. Heading H1T. A variable inductor for use at high frequencies comprises a pair of conductors connected by a movable element. The inductor shown consists of two C-shaped conductive elements 13, 14 with an integral end link 15, the effective lengths of these elements being variable by moving a rotatable self-centering arm 23 carrying brush unit 20. One or more similar units may be mounted on the common shaft 25, and may be shielded by plates 8. The assembly may be enclosed in a hermetically sealed casing and an inert liquid such as a long-chain ester may be used to remove by evaporation the heat produced during operation. In a modification the elements 13, 14, 15 may be formed by printed circuit techniques. A number of units may be connected through switches so that the number in circuit may be varied.
