Abstract

990,554. Pipes and tubes. A. WIMPFHEIMER & BRO. Inc. Jan. 19, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2031/62. Heading F2P. [Also in Division B5] A rigid product, which may be shaped before being rigidified, e.g. a conduit, Fig. 4, formed by joining the overlapping edges of a flat sheet, is made by impregnating, with a phenolic, epoxy or other thermosetting resin, or polythene, a vinyl polymer or other thermoplastic resin, a two-ply fabric comprising woven plies 10, Fig. 2, of spun or continuous glass or other yarns, connected by tie warp yarns 13, groups of which are alternately so tensioned as to space the plies apart as shown, and to draw the plies together, thus providing, across the fabric, open areas 16, Fig. 1, alternating with close woven areas 15 within which the fabric may be cut without fraying. The tie-yarns 13 may be in pairs passing around alternate wefts as shown, or may be carried over three or more wefts. The areas 16 may include stuffer yarns 17 of material permeable to the bonding resin, e.g. cotton or foamed polystyrene, which may be retained to assist bonding or be withdrawn to leave longitudinal cavities which become filled with resin. Close-woven areas in the weft direction, to facilitate cutting the fabric laterally without fraying, may be formed by increasing the tension on all the tie-yarns 13 at intervals during weaving. The filler materials 17 may constitute electrical resistance elements.
