Abstract

990,062. Transplanting trees. REED ROLLER BIT CO. Jan. 19, 1962, No. 2105/62. Heading A1B. A method of transplanting trees comprises the steps of placing a plurality of cutting blades around a tree to cut a section of earth including the roots, lifting the tree and the section of earth and transplanting the tree to another site. As shown the earth section is dug by blades 35 which are oscillated by a drive 29, 30 and raised and lowered by cables 38, the blades being mounted in a frame 20 raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram 17. After the tree has been removed as shown in Fig. 1 the apparatus A shown in Fig. 4 comprising a number of segments 40 tied at the bottom is placed in the cavity C<SP>1</SP> of Fig. 1 and the blades 35 are lowered into the cavity with the tree, the blades 35 then being removed leaving the tree in the container A. The segments 40 are connected to a ring 52 and the tree is then lifted out of the cavity and placed in a receptacle R or R<SP>1</SP> for transport to a new location where the ring 52 is again attached to the segments 40 to lift the tree out of the receptacle R or R<SP>1</SP> and to place it in a cavity C<SP>1</SP>. A pin 45 is then removed to release a cable 42 which connects the lower ends of the segments so enabling the segments 40 to be pulled out of the ground. In a modification the trees are dug up by blades which are oscillated by an electric motor the machine having handles at each end so that it may be manually held.
