In a furnace comprising hairpin-shaped resistance-heating elements of MoSi 2 , each having a glow zone portion 12, Fig. 4, depending freely in the furnace space and two spaced lead-in ends 13 passing to the exterior through insulation 16 in a vault or wall of the furnace, a middle portion 16B of this insulation is designed for good transfer of heat from the lead-ins to a central layer 14B of the furnace vault or wall of good heat conductivity, there being further electrically-insulating layers of a lower heat conductivity 'material disposed on opposite sides of the middle portion and the central layer. The central layer 14B of the furnace vault may include or be replaced by a cooling channel 19, Fig. 5, for circulation of air or water, having walls 20 of good heat conductivity in contact with the central portion 16B of insulation 16, the cooling channel being common to a plurality of heating elements disposed in a row. Also, as shown in Fig. 5, the central portions of the lead-ins 13 may radiate heat to a ceramic tube 21, the ends of which are secured in brick plugs 22, 23.
