Abstract
989,654. Folding and collating sheets. L. L. MAYER, and B. R. KIRSCHNER. Oct. 16, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 39211/62. Heading B6H. A method of collating sheet material by insetting includes the steps of causing a master sheet of a predetermined minimum stiffness to travel in a determined direction, and of feeding a second sheet of foldable material transversely across the direction of travel of the master sheet, whereby the master sheet engages while it is being fed and buckles the second sheet which wraps around the master sheet to form a collated assembly. A plurality of roller pairs 1-14 to n-14 are provided, the rollers 14a of each pair being driven. Sheets are fed by roller feeds from alternately opposite directions on to platform 34 so as to lie over the corresponding roller pairs, or they may be fed in sideways. Master sheets are fed in turn from a stack 56 to rollers 28, 14b and against a stop 32, thereby being buckled to pass between the rollers 1-14 and buckle the sheet lying over the rollers 2-14, the assembly passing between the rollers 2-14. This process is repeated at each roller pair, each sheet being folded around the driving assembly. The last sheet is an envelope blank, and the final assembly is buckled by a stop 32a so as to pass between rollers 82, 14b to envelope gumming and folding rollers 90, 92, 94. Each sheet feeder has an electric motor, and a control system is provided so that any particular feeder may be rendered inoperative. Each feeder motor stops when a sheet reaches collating position against a stop 38 below an electrical contact C. The master sheet feeder 40 operates only when there is a sheet in collating position correspondingly to all the feeders which are operative.
