Abstract

989,058. Submarine cable laying. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. June 22, 1961 [July 1, 1960], No. 22632/61. Heading B8B. In cable handling apparatus in which the cable 2, Fig. 12, makes a number of turns on a drum 15, the turns being traversed axially by inclined fleeting rings 16, the drum 15 is also traversed axially to present a clear surface for a repeater 7 as it approaches and is restored to its initial axial position after passage of the repeater. The cable 2 is fed to the drum through a guide trough 4, Fig. 14, and is normally located against a side flange 19. Entry of the repeater 7 into the trough actuates a pressure switch 18 (not shown) controlling the axial movements of the drum. The trough 4 may have a recess 20 to accommodate the repeater 7 without changing the height of the cable 2. The drum 15, Fig. 4, is mounted for free axial movement on guide rollers 32, carried by a rotary cylinder 31. The fleeting rings 16 are mounted on rollers 41 running on edgeguides of the housing 13. The drum 15 is moved axially by actuation of a screw-jack 79 carrying rollers 82 in engagement with a flange 83 on the drum. The drive for the screw jack comprises a reverse gear mechanism 65, 67 engaged by a solenoid actuated lever 62 under the control of the pressure switch 18. A limit switch trip gear 86, 87 controls the extent of movement of the screw jack 49.
