Abstract

A self-sterilizing propellant for aerosol dispensers charged under an initial pressure of 15-100 p.s.i.g. comprises a non-reactive, non-toxic gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen, a halogenated hydrocarbon containing one or more fluorine atoms, and 40-1000 parts per million of an alkylene oxide. Tests are described involving B. subtilis spores and aerosol formulations of Furacin-5-nitro-2-furaldehyde semicarbazone-in hexyleneglycol and polyethylene glycol, with trichloromonofluoromethane and a mixture of monochlorodifluoroethane and ethylene oxide.ALSO:A self-sterilizing propellant for aerosol dispensers of pharmaceutical topical preparations charged under an initial pressure of 15-100 p.s.i.g. comprises a non-reactive, non-toxic gas, e.g., carbon dioxide, nitrogen, a halogenated hydrocarbon containing one or more fluorine atoms, and 40-1000 parts per million of an alkylene oxide.
