Abstract

The catalyst used in preparing esters by transesterifying esters with alcohols or esters and for esterifying acids with alcohols, is a polymeric two- or three-dimensional compound <FORM:0988626/C2/1> in which X is a monomeric or polymeric aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic residue which may be substituted by functional groups or hetero atoms, and which X's may be different acid may be cross-linked with one another. Numerous transesterifications are given, and include butanol with b -methoxyproprionic acid methyl ester; n-hexanol with chloracetic butyl ester and acetic acid with butanol. A list of suitable catalysts is given (see Division B1).ALSO:A transesterification catalyst is a polymeric two- or three-dimensional compound <FORM:0988626/B1-B2/1> in which X is a monomeric or polymeric aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic residue which may be substituted by functional groups or hetero atoms, and in which Xs may be different and may be cross-linked with one another. The catalyst is obtained by reacting a titanium tetrahalide, an orthotitanic ester or an orthotitanic ester chelate containing one atomic proportion of titanium, with less than 4 molecular proportions of an aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic polyhydroxy compound or compounds containing the residue X. In a modification, the orthotitanic ester or chelate containing a part of the residue X is reacted with a compound capable of completing the formation of the residue X. A long list of suitable compounds is given. The catalysts can be used as such in solution or suspension, or as filler bodies, or as a coating on filler bodies, eg. of pumice, coke, active carbon, silica gel, aluminium silicate or porous ceramics.
