Abstract

Copolyesters are made by condensing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of bisphenol A with the diacid chloride of orthophthalic acid and with the diacid chloride(s) of isophthalic and/or terephthalic acid, the diacid chlorides being dissolved in a water-immiscible organic solvent which is also a solvent or swelling agent for the copolyester formed. Catalysts for the reaction are quaternary ammonium, phosphonium and arsonium compounds and ternary sulphonium compounds. The organic solvent may be methylene chloride, 1:2-dichloroethane or chloroform. The copolyesters are also soluble in 1:1:2-trichloroethane, sym.-tetrachloroethane, methylchloroform, dichloroethylene, tetrahydrofurane and cyclohexanone and mixtures of these with benzene or toluene. The preferred copolyesters contain 45-65% of orthophthalate units and 55.35% of isophthalate and/or terephthalate units. Uses.-Film and moulded articles. Specification 902,021 is referred to.
