Abstract
988,036. Grab-machine. PRIESTMAN BROS Ltd. March 24, 1964 [April 24, 1963], No. 16170/63. Heading E1F. A load carrier 8 (Fig. I) is steadied by a bridle rope 21, which is wound on a drum 22 driven by a slipping clutch 29, 36, 39 (Fig. III) to keep rope 21 taut, the loading on the clutch being automatically reduced when carrier 8 is lowered so that drum 22 rotates readily against the drive. Clutch disc 36 is carried by shaft 33, rotated by gear 23. Drum 22 is urged rightwards by a spring 42, mounted on spindle 47 which is attached to a rightwardly urged diaphragm in pneumatic chamber 48. When grab 8 (Fig. II, not shown) is being raised drums 13, 16 are driven by chain 19 and gear wheels 17, 18 of slightly different, diameters, whereby hoist rope 15 bears the weight of grab 8 and hold rope 11 is kept just taut. When grab 8 is lowered the clutches between gears 17, 18 and drums 13, 16 are disconnected and a third clutch connects the drums with a one-to-one gear ratio so that they lower at the same speed. This third clutch is pneumatically controlled through line 57 and when it is engaged a valve 56 is controlled to vent chamber 48, previously pressurized so as to urge spindle 47 rightwards, to atmosphere, so that only spring 42 now urges drum 22 rightwards and clutch 29, 36, 39 slips more readily. The grab 8 (Fig. II, not shown) is opened and closed by paying out and taking in hoist rope 15 relative to hold rope 11. Each bucket 9 of the grab is connected to one branch 26 of bridle rope 21. Jib 3 is luffed by rope 4, and turntable 2 is mounted on a mobile chassis or on a dredger. Specifications 536,952 and 957,082 are referred to.
