987,957. Coating webs. BOWATER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. March 4, 1964 [March 20, 1963], No. 11140/63. Heading D1L. [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] Apparatus for applying a thermoplastic material such as a hot melt adhesive, in a predetermined pattern on a travelling surface e.g. of a continuous web on succession of discrete sheets, comprises a rotatable, roller-like, member 2 having a cavity 3 to which melted thermoplastic material is supplied under pressure at a controlled rate, an opening or group of openings 19 in member 2 opening into cavity 3 and heating means to maintain the thermoplastic material above its melting point, the member 2 rotating in contact with the travelling surface (preferably with the same peripheral speed) so that material issueing from the openings 19 is applied discontinuously to the moving surface, and the rate of supply of material to the cavity being predetermined according to the speed of rotation of the cylindrical member so that a predetermined quantity of material is discharged during each revolution thereof. In the form shown the member 2 has an internal core 1 and an external block 6 mounted in a housing 5, the thermoplastic material being supplied via ducts 7, 8, 9, 10 to cavity 3. Housings 12 and 15 are mounted on either side of member 2 and a heating medium e.g. hot air is pumped through housing 12, through ducts 18 in the core 1 to the inside of the housing 15 from which it passes to the atmosphere via openings 17. If material is applied to a web the web is caused to pass through a nip formed by the rotating member 2 and a backing roller. A further web may be brought into contact with and pressed against the coated web to form a laminate. Two or more groups of openings 19 may be provided on the member 2. An example is given of a particular mix used to adhesively coat a polythene coated paper.
