Abstract

987,935. Magnetic switches; thermal switches; fluid actuation of switches. ROBERTSHAWFULTON CONTROLS CO. Jan. 15, 1962, No. 1444/62. Heading H2B. A sealed contact device is actuated upon the engagement of a movable magnet with a magnetic mass whose position relative to the armature of the contact device is adjustable. The movable magnet 5 may be actuated by a bi-metal strip 6, or a bellows or a Bourdon tube (not shown) and it co-operates with the magnetic mass 7 which is mounted on an adjusting screw 8. The sealed contact device has a quartz or glass tube 9 filled with hydrogen, nitrogen, or neon. The armature 2 of the device is mounted on a resilient contact blade 4 and co-operates with fixed contacts 21, 27 carried on insulated frames 16, 17 respectively. The sides of these frames, together with a spring blade 20 engage the inside wall of the tube thereby supporting the contact assembly. The tube is secured to a bracket 10 by an adhesive. In Fig. 4 (not shown) two single pole contact devices, each with an associated magnetic mass, are actuated by a permanent magnet moving between them. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the magnet 5 normally engages the magnetic mass 7 and only actuates the contact device when released.
