Abstract

Kaolin is rendered hydrophobic and organophilic by coating with 10.1 to 10%, based on the weight of the kaolin, of a complex of a chromium or zirconium salt and a carboxylic acid. The acid contains at least 3 and preferably less than 24 carbon atoms. The kaolin is treated by addition of the complex, for example in isopropanol solution, to stirred kaolin strip, filtering and drying. The modified kaolin is used as a filler for mastics (see Division C3).ALSO:A mastic composition contains kaolin coated with 0.1 to 10%, based on the weight of the kaolin, of a complex of a chromium or zirconium salt and a carboxylic acid. The acid contains at least 3 and preferably less than 24 carbon atoms. The kaolin is modified by addition of the complex, for example in isopropanol solution, to stirred kaolin slip, filtering and drying. The mastic is produced by dispersing the coated clay in hydrocarbons, e.g. mineral oil or polyolefines, or vegetable oil or chlorinated naphthalene.
