Abstract

The acidity of unsaturated polyesters having an acid number of 80-200 is reduced by heating them with a substantially equivalent amount of an unsaturated glycidyl ether in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g. an amine or a metal alcoholate). The alcohol portion of the glycidyl ether may be allyl or methallyl alcohol (or their methyl substitution products) or crotyl alcohol. The unsaturated polyester is derived by reacting (a) a saturated dihydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene-, diethylene-, 1:2-propylene- or 1:3-butylene glycols) or the corresponding epoxides, (b) an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride (e.g. fumaric, maleic, itaconic or citraconic acids) and, possibly, (c) a saturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride (e.g. adipic, succinic, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic or tetrachlorophthalic acids), (d) a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. glycerol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol) or (e) a monohydric alcohol (e.g. benzyl alcohol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether or n-heptyl alcohol). The polyesters may be dissolved in vinyl or allyl compounds (e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate or triallyl cyanurate) and then copolymerized therewith in the presence of organic peroxides (e.g. M.E.K. peroxide) and, possibly, cobalt octoate, to give mouldings or coatings free from surface tackiness.
