Abstract

A water-in-oil emulsion used as an impregnant for cellulosic laminating stock (see Group VIII) comprises in the dispersed phase an aqueous solution of a melamine-formaldehyde condensate and in the continuous phase a solution in a water-insoluble or only slightly water-soluble liquid of a polymerizable polyester derived from a polycarboxylic acid at least the major proportion of which is an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol of which at least the major proportion is a diol of formula <FORM:0793468/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkylene radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, A is a 2-alkylidene radical having 3 or 4 carbon atoms, m and n are at least one, and the average sum of m and n is not over 6. The continuous phase may also contain a vinyl monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phenyl phosphonate or the diallyl ester of ethylene glycol carbonate and a vinyl poly-merization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, succinyl peroxide, peracetic acid or tertiary butyl perbenzoate. Specified solvents for the continuous phase are benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone or an aromatic vinyl compound, e.g. styrene or divinyl benzene. Unsaturated dicarboxylic acids which may be used to prepare the polyester are maleic, fumaric, itaconic, or mesaconic and other acids are phthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic, chlorinated phthalic, isophthalic and terephthalic. Polyhydric alcohols used to prepare the polyester in addition to the specified diol may be ethylene-, propylene-, trimethylene-, butylene-, hexylene-, cyclohexane-, xylylene- and the lower polyalkylene - glycols.
