In apparatus for mixing fibrous material such as tobacco the material is placed in layers 3 in a trough having a bottom formed as an endless belt conveyer 2 by which the mass is urged into contact with rotating rakes 4 arranged in counter-rotating pairs ; the rakes may be vertical or inclined towards the trough. There may be additional counter-rotating pairs of rakes placed behind the gaps between the first pairs to loosen any lumps (see Fig. 3, not shown). The mixture is discharged on to a belt conveyer 6.
