Abstract
Glutamic acid is obtained from a glutamic acid fermentation broth by (i) adjusting the pH of the broth to about the isoelectric point of glutamic acid by adding an acidic liquor which has been obtained by the acid treatment in the fourth step of a previous operation, and, if necessary, also adding additional acid, and separating this first crop of glutamic acid crystals, (ii) separating a mixture of micro-organism cells and huminous substance from the mother liquor from which the first crop of glutamic acid crystals has been separated, (iii) concentrating this clarified mother liquor and separating the resulting second crop of glutamic acid crystals, and (iv) heating with a mineral acid all or a portion of the resulting mother liquor from which the second crop of glutamic acid crystals has been separated. The glutamic acid obtained in the second crystallization may be recycled to the first step of a following operation, or washed and combined with the first crop of crystals. The product acid may be recrystallized as the monosodium salt. Specifications 869,948, 870,031 and 924,035 are referred to.
