Abstract

Antimony trioxide, of particle size 10-20 m and the low opacity desirable for incorporation in flame resistant and coloured plastic compositions, is prepared by heating commercially available Sb2O3, of particle size 1-2 m and corresponding high opacity, to a temperature in the range 400-570 DEG C., under conditions which prevent runaway oxidation of Sb2O3 e.g. heating in an inert atmosphere such as N2, heating in air with mechanical disturbance or heating in a closed container. Sb2O3 thus produced may be incorporated in thermoplastic synthetic resins together with a chlorinated paraffin or a chlorinated diphenyl.ALSO:Antimony trioxide of low opacity and particle size 10-20n is incorporated as a flameproofing ingredient in thermoplastic synthetic resin and cellulose derivative compositions, together with a chlorinated paraffin or a chlorinated diphenyl. The composition may comprise a polyester, polystyrene, polyterpene, styrene butadiene, polypropylene or polyethylene together with chlorinated paraffin, calcium stearate and tricresyl phosphate being incorporated in the polyethylene composition. Cellulose propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate compositions are other examples given.
