Abstract

In the production of flame-proof expanded thermoplastic articles by adding a flame-proofing agent to the expanded granules and agglutinating by heat, the expanded granules are coated with a powdered water-insoluble chlorine-containing substance fusible at the agglutinating temperature. The granules should be slightly moist to assist adherence of the powder. Granular polystyrene may be expanded with petroleum ether, coated with powdered chlorinated paraffin wax containing 65 to 75 per cent chlorine, a mixture thereof with antimony trioxide or chlorine-containing polyvinyl compounds and agglutinated at 90 DEG to 130 DEG C.
