Abstract

986,391. Tobacco smoke filters. EASTMAN KODAK CO. May 4, 1961 [May 5, 1960], No. 16207/61. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D1] A method for applying an addendum to a filiamentary tow comprises, simultaneously with or subsequently to the application of the addendum, passing the tow through a jet device in which the tow is subjected to a jet of air of minimum turbulence, and causing the tow to accumulate at the exit of the jet device whereby air exhausted from the jet device is filtered of airborne addendum. A continuous multi-filiament crimped tow 1, Fig. 2, is drawn over a guide 3 by a feed roller pair 4. It then passes, under tension generated by the suction of a blooming jet 6, wherein it is subjected to an explosive expansion of compressed air in a specially adapted venturi nozzle. While in the jet 6, the tow 1 is subjected to a spray or fog of atomised liquid plasticizer. On leaving the jet 6 the tow 1 passes feed rollers 7 driven at a slower speed than roller pair 4 so that the tow 1 is relaxed or only very slightly tensioned between the jet 6 and the rollers 7. The tow 1 then advances to a garniture 8 and thence to a filter rod forming machine 9. The jet 6 comprises, Fig 3, an outside shell 10 containing inner members 11, 14 and an orifice plate 13 held in place by threaded plugs 12, 15. A passageway 16 for the tow 1 extends through the jet 6 from an entrance 17 to an exit 18. Air is supplied to the jet shell 10 through one or more openings 24, 24<SP>1</SP> into an annular chamber 25. The tow is retarded and caused to accumulate at the exit 18 of the jet 6 by flat spring fingers 26, 26<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>11</SP> adjustably mounted in the member 14 by a clamp ring 28. The air supplied to the jet carries plasticizer in the form of an aerosol produced by a conventional liquid atomizing unit. In a modification, Fig. 6, plasticizer in a tank 55 is fed by gear pumps 56, 56<SP>1</SP> through flexible tubing 50, 50<SP>1</SP> to slit tube applicators 51, 51<SP>1</SP> the slits of which may be covered with thin felt and/or a fine mesh screen. The applicators 51, 51<SP>1</SP> are mounted on an arm 62 pivoted at 63, one end of the arm 62 being connected to the piston of an air cylinder or solenoid 64 so that the applicators 51, 51<SP>1</SP> may be rotated, by the means, out of contact with the tow 1 when the apparatus is stopped.
