Abstract

A base oil, suitable for use in lubricating oil compositions, consists of a liquid blend of (a) a major proportion by weight of one or more liquid neutral polyesters of a saturated C2- 15 aliphatic polyhydric primary alcohol, having no hydrogen atoms attached to any carbon atom in a 2-position with respect to any hydroxyl group, with a saturated C6- 10 aliphatic non-hydroxylated monocarboxylic acid, and (b) a minor proportion by weight of one or more substantially water insoluble polyoxyalkylene glycol ethers of formula RO(R1O)nR2 where R is alkyl, R1 is alkylene of at least 2 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or alkyl, and n is an integer, said ether being liquid at normal temperatures and having a viscosity of at least 15 cs. at 210 DEG F. The relative proportions of (a) and (b) are so chosen that the viscosity of the blend is between 2 and 10 cs. at 210 DEG F. A typical blend is 92 weight per cent of trimethylolpropane tricaprylate with 8 weight per cent of "Ucon" LB 1145 ("Ucon" is a Trade Mark). Lubricating oil compositions may be formed by adding to the base oil one or more antioxidants and/or copper passivators. Suitable antioxidants are dioctylphenothiazine, and dioctyldiphenylamine either alone or in combination with each other or with another amine-type antioxidant, e.g. phenyl-a -naphthylamine. Suitable copper passivators are imidazoles, pyrazoles, triazoles and a compound available commercially as DPL 297 which is of unknown constitution but contains aromatic, acid and amide groups as identified by spectographic examination.
