Abstract

A base oil, suitable for use as a lubricating oil or as the base oil in lubricating compositions, consists of a homogeneous liquid blend of (a) a major proportion by weight of one or more liquid neutral polyesters of a saturated C2- 15 aliphatic polyhydric primary alcohol, having no hydrogen atoms attached to any carbon atom in a 2-position with respect to any hydroxyl group, with a saturated C6- 10 aliphatic non-hydroxylated monocarboxylic acid; and (b) a minor proportion by weight of one or more polymerized esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a saturated C5- 20 aliphatic monohydric primary alcohol, the ester or esters having a M.W. or average M.W. of at least 10,000, and the relative proportions of (a) and (b) being such that the viscosity of the blend is between 2 and 10 cs. at 210 DEG F. A typical blend is 96 weight per cent of trimethylolpropane tricaprylate with 4 weight per cent of a commercially available material known as Acryloid HF 825 which is a 50% solution of a polymethacrylate in di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate. Lubricating oil compositions may be formed by adding to the base oil one or more antioxidants and/or copper passivators. Suitable antioxidants are dioctylphenothiazine and dioctyldiphenylamine either alone or in combination with each other or with another amine-type antioxidant, e.g. phenyl-a -naphthylamine. Suitable copper passivators are imidazoles, pyrazoles, triazoles and a material available commercially as DPL 297 which is of unknown constitution but has been shown by spectrographic analysis to contain aromatic, acid, and amide groups.
