[Also in Division B8] In a method and apparatus for causing thixotropic material to flow from a container, the container 11 is vibrated by a table 12 and has internal fins 30 which work the material; an additional vibrator 48 is attached to the outlet pipe 45. As shown, the fins may be attached to the container at their outer ends, have their inner ends free, be radially arranged and have depending blades 31 twisted or secured at an oblique angle to the fin. The fin assembly may be made detachable by fixing the fins to a ring 64, 66 instead of to the container wall. A disc baffle 35 having an axially extending conical nose 38 is supported by legs 37 over the outlet 32. Interchangeable inverted cups 44 of different depths may be used to provide various ratios of the area between the legs 37 to that of the outlet 32 ; the preferred ratio is 1À25 to 1À00. An alternative form of baffle with which the ratio may be varied by adjusting the height of the baffle is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown). The outlet pipe 45 is flexible and provided with a pinch-cock 47. There is a jacket 26 for a heat exchange medium. A pressure-tight cover 28 has connections 50, 53 to compressed air and vacuum pumps 51, 54 respectively, the control valves 52, 55 being controlled by a single operating rod 56 so that the container 11 may be alternately pressurized to expel, and exhausted to de-aerate, the material therein. The table 12 is vibrated mechanically at the natural frequency of the springs 15 for the load imposed on them, the speed of the shaft 17 being suitably increased as discharge of material from the container 11 to the casting mould 14 decreases the load. The depending blades 31 act as paddles to propel the material about the outlet 32 and in combination with the internal shear forces set up by the fins and blades, and the arrangement of the baffle 35, maintain the surface level of the material substantially horizontal during discharge.
