985,850. Tubular heat exchangers. NATIONAL DISTILLERS AND CHEMICAL CORPORATION. May 30, 1963, No. 21713/63. Heading F4S. A duplex tube for a heat exchanger comprises two tubes 1, 2 fitted tightly one inside the other except at their ends where the opposed tube surfaces are separated by a gas permeable layer 8 which may consist of a layer of chromium, or of particles of hard material such as sand or other abrasive. The layer 8 prevents the formation of too tight a seal between the surfaces when the tube end is expanded into a tube plate 7 and hence permits discharge through the layer of a fluid such as hydrogen which may have permeated through one of the tube walls from one of the heat exchanging fluids. In one form described one tube is of ferrous metal and the other of cuprous metal.
