[Classes 64 (iii), 123 (ii) and 123 (iii).] In a tubular heat exchanger comprising cylindrical tubes fitted with metallic bodies which present a large heat transferring surface to the gas space between the tubes, the bodies divide the gas space into narrow, smooth-walled passages extending in straight lines from gas inlet to outlet. Heat exchanging bodies c of cast iron or other metal are fitted to the tubes a so as to surround each tube along its entire length, and shaped to form flat surfaces f. A fireproof body h, such as firebrick, may form part of the exchanger body; the configuration of the latter inhibits dust deposits on the tubes. A single metallic body may embrace a number of tubes and parts may be hollow to reduce weight. The bodies may be rectangular or star-shaped in cross section, and may be provided with ribs ; the ribs and the bodies may be inclined to the axes of the tubes.
