985,760. Belt fastenings. C. MATTHAEI, and C. MATTHAEI, Jun. Feb. 11, 1963 [March 3, 1962], No. 5458/63. Heading F2Q. In a conveyer belt fastener, each of hinged U-shaped plate elements 1 having limbs 2, 3 is secured to the relevant belt end by staples arranged parallel or transverse to the belt end edge, or circular or, as shown, rectangular cross-section rivets 5 which initially are held captive, by pressing, spot welding or adhesive, in one limb 1, and, for securing the element, are movable relative to the limb 1, through the belt, and into anchoring engagement with the oppositely disposed limb 2 which is provided with a channel 9 in which the rivet point is seated. A plurality of elements 1 may be united on a wire as by welding. As shown, each limb 2, 3 initially has an outward bulge 10 between adjoining rivets and extending parallel to the belt end edge. Firstly, each element 1 is pushed over the belt end; secondly, the limbs 2, 3 are pressed together by suitable pressing members; thirdly, while maintaining pressure on the limbs the rivets are driven through by separate plungers in one of the pressing members; and finally, to pre-stress the rivets the bulges are pressed flat by flat-ended pressing members which are arranged adjacent those aforementioned and may anchor the rivets by distortion of their ends. Alternatively, the rivet ends may be anchored by bending over in a subsequent separate operation. In Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the bulges 10 are dispensed with and the limbs and rivets are pressed simultaneously.
