860,147. Belt fasteners. LEFLON, H. Nov. 17, 1958 [Dec. 31, 1957], No. 36844/58. Class 80 (1). In fasteners, particularly for conveyer belts, of the type comprising members having a series of U-shaped elements 1 secured across each end of the belt and each having a pair of intermeshing portions 1b, 1c, the hinge pin 3 that passes therethrough is a piece of flexible sheet cable with a head 4 brazed to one end and is inserted so that its tendency to creep holds it in place by the head abutting the end element. Alternatively, particularly where the belt may encounter reverse motion, the pin may be positively held in place by a lug, formed on one of the end elements 1, which is bent over to prevent outward movement of the pin, Figs. 6 ... 9, not shown. The elements 1 may be initially joined on one side of the belt, as described in Specification 667,519, by grooves 1a, which will be readily broken during service to allow transverse flexibility of the belt, and may be of rhomboidal form. Methods of countersinking-holes in the elements for the heads of securing rivets, which have pointed ends to enable them to be driven through the belt and then be broken off before riveting, are described.
