Abstract

a -Aminobenzyl penicillin is prepared by subjecting to enzymatic cleavage by means of chymotrypsin in an aqueous medium a penicillin compound of the general formula <FORM:0985688/C2/1> in which R1 is the residue of a carboxylic or sulphonic acid and R2 is hydrogen, or R1 and R2 form together the residue of a dicarboxylic acid, R3 is a salt-forming group and X is hydrogen or hydroxyl, and wherein the amino acid residue A1 has the L-configuration while the amino acid residue A2 may have the D- or the L-configuration. Examples describe the production of a -aminobenzyl penicillin from 6-(N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl - D(-) -a - amino - a - phenylacetamido)-penicillanic acid and from the corresponding -L(+)- and N-acetylcompounds.
