Abstract

985,287. Lawn-mowers. H. C. WEBB & CO. Ltd. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 8, 1962], No. 46412/62. Heading A1F. A battery-electric mower is provided with separate motors for driving the cutters and for traction. The cutters may be rotaryreel, rotary-scythe or reciprocating, but the invention is shown applied to a rotary-reel mower having a reel 13 driven by a motor 17 through a chain 23 and having a rear roller 14 driven, from a motor 18, through chain-drives 27, 31, 35. The motors are mounted side-by-side with their driving shafts 19, 20 protruding through one sideplate 9 of the machine. Switches 40, 41, connected by Bowden cables 42 to levers on the handlebars 43, control the motors. The battery is mounted in a cradle 37 carried by cross-shafts 11 interconnecting the side-plates 9, 10. The rear-roller drive incorporates a freewheel (not shown) enabling the machine to be pushed easily with driven cutters only, without the need for clutches.
