Abstract

1,206,705. Rotary mower. G. D. MOUNTFIELD Ltd. 9 Oct., 1969 [19 Nov., 1968], No. 54907/68. Heading A1F. [Also in Division F2Q] A vertical axis rotary lawn mower in which the cutting height is continuously adjustable comprises a body 1, driving motor 2, and a rear roller 3 and front wheel 4 which, by means of bell crank levers 5, 7 and 11 and tie rod 12 are vertically movable with respect to the body on actuation of handwheel 14 co-operating with threaded rod 13. The drive to wheels 4 is contained in chain casing 15 and comprises a shaft 21 driven from motor shaft 24 on which a driving sprocket 25 is mounted which drives, via a chain 26, a driven sprocket 27 which is freely rotatable on the clutch shaft 29. A second driving sprocket 32 is fixed on shaft 29 and drive to sprocket 27 is caused when pin 46 on dog clutch ring 47 engages a hole 55 in sprocket 27, thus connecting it to shaft 29. Dog clutch ring 47 is controlled by a Bowden cable via arm 48, rod 49, lever 50 and cable clamp 53. Sprocket 47 is connected by a chain to sprocket 34 which is fixed on hollow shaft 35 rotatable in bearing bushes 36, 37 which themselves are fixed in flanged sleeves 38, 39 respectively. Sleeves 38, 39 pass through oval openings 40, 41 in chain casing 15 so casing 15 can swing in an arc as shaft 35 moves vertically. The wheel driving shaft extends through shaft 35 and is keyed to it. The return run of chain 57 goes round 2 jockey rollers vertically coplanar with chain 57 to ensure constant chain tension. On the lower inner side of casing 15 is a smooth guide strip against which the lower run of chain 57 bears.
