Abstract
985,167. Tufting machines. SINGER CO. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 28, 1962], No. 50936/63. Heading D1G. In a tufting machine for producing cut pile a knife is moved in a path such that its cutting edge co-operates with the under edge of a looper hook to sever a pile loop on the latter during a cutting stroke, and is thereafter moved along the side of the hook out of engagement with said under edge during the return stroke. A looper hook 12 is carried by a bracket 10 rigid with a shaft 9 oscillated by means of a crank 18 thereon co-operating with a pitman 17 actuated by an eccentric 16 on a rotary shaft 15. A knife 19 is carried at one end of a lever 21 which is journelled intermediately on an eccentric 24 on shaft 15, and is connected at its other end by an anchor link 25 to the machine frame. The arrangement is such that the point 29 of the knife traces an orbital path P in space, and moves relatively to the hook in an orbital path M. whereby the ascending cutting edge 27 of the knife co-operates with the descending under edge 28 of the hook between the points 33a and 30a on path M, while edge 27 moves along the side of the hook and out of engagement with edge 28 during the remainder of path M.
