When a push-button 7 is actuated to interrupt the holding circuit of contactor 4, a switch 15 is closed, a motor 1 being disconnected from A.C. source 3 but operating as a generator to energize brake coil 14 through rectifier 12, 13. The current in the coil 14 is maintained by diode 16, so prolonging the braking action, In the event of mains failure, a minimum voltage or current relay 11 responds to release the contactor 4, the motor being braked automatically. A capacitor 17 is effective during inching operation to add its stored energy to that which is recovered from the motor for energization of the brake coil.
