Abstract

1290810 Starting inverters CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 28 June 1971 30132/71 Heading H2F In a frequency changer comprising an inverter 11 supplied by a rectifier 10, excessive starting current is reduced by charging a capacitor 17 connected across the D.C. side of the inverter 11 via resistance 21 from an auxiliary source 25 of higher voltage than the output of rectifier 10. When capacitor 17 is charged approximately to the voltage of rectifier 10, the inverter 11 is supplied from the output of rectifier 10 and the auxiliary supply 25 disconnected. As described, the inverter 11 is started by closing circuit breaker 20, energizing relay A, contacts Al of which commence charging capacitor 17 via resistor 21. When capacitor 17 is charged to slightly greater than the output of rectifier 10, relay B is energized via diode 27, energizing relay C, contacts C2 of which supply the inverter from the rectifier 10 while contacts C1 release relay A and so disconnect the auxiliary supply 25. The invention prevents excess current due to initial saturation of the transformer 14.
