Abstract

984,926. Grinding. L. CUOGHI, E. FACCHINI, and A. ZAFFERANI. Feb. 21, 1964 [Feb. 21, 1963], No. 7430/64. Heading B3D. A machine for edge-grinding glass plates or the like comprises a supporting member C for firmly holding a template T and a plate or other workpiece P to be edge-ground in a horizontal position and in superposed parallel relationship, a driven wheeled carriage K provided with a vertical shift 10 carrying a feeler disc 15 at the height of the template and a grinding wheel 16 at the height of the workpiece, and means for simultaneously driving the vertical shaft and wheeled carriage to urge the carriage with its feeler disc against the template while being driven around the template and workpiece. The supporting member has a number of columns C on a bedplate 1, each column having a cavity 2 on its upper surface which is surrounded by a supporting and packing ring 3 and connected by a hose 5 to a vacuum pump to hold the template, such as a previously ground workpiece, on the upper surface of the column. A plurality of rings 6 are disposed above the template and each ring is provided with rings 7, 8 in its plane surface and connected by a hose 9 to the vacuum pump so as to hold the workpiece securely above the template. The shaft 10 is mounted in a column 11 on the carriage K and at its upper end rotatably carries the feeler disc 15 and fixedly carries the grinding wheel 16 which has a contour complementary to that to be ground on the workpiece. The shaft 10 is driven by a belt 29 and pulleys 14, 24 from a motor 22 which also drives by way of pulleys 23, 26 and belt 25 a reduction gear 27 connected by a chain drive 28 to a driving wheel 19. The carriage is also supported by a pair of castor wheels 20, 21 having conical profiles. Wheel 20 is carried by a pivot 120 freely rotatable about a vertical axis and wheel 21 is resiliently restrained by a spring 34 at right angles to the plane of the driving wheel 19. The pivot 30 of the wheel 21 is mounted in a bearing 230 secured to a shaft 330 vertically slidable in the carriage and having its upper end connected by a fork 130 and bell-crank lever 32 to a threaded spindle whereby the vertical height of the carriage, and hence the disc 15 and grinding wheel 16 are adjusted. In operation, a workpiece and template are mounted on the columns C and the carriage is positioned with the feeler disc adjacent the template and the workpiece engaging the grinding wheel. When the motor is started to revolve the grinding wheel, the carriage is driven around the workpiece and the grinding wheel and feeler disc are pressed against the workpiece and template.
