Abstract

1381052 Polishing FORGES DE BOLOGNE 17 Jan 1972 [28 Jan 1971] 2215/72 Heading B3D A machine for polishing a surface, such as the flange 6a of a spool 6, comprises a frame 1 on which a spigot 2 is rotatable by a drive member 3, the spigot being arranged to support the surface, and an abrasive surface 13a on at least one polishing head 13 hinged to an arm 12 mounted to pivot on a carriage 9 about an axis 11 perpendicular to the axis of the spigot, the carriage being reciprocable in a direction A perpendicular to the axes of the spigot and the pivot. The drive member consists of a motor and gear-box 3 which rotates the spigot through a belt drive 4. The carriage 9 is reciprocable along guideways 8 by a jack 10 and supports the pivot 11 for the arm 12 which is rocked about the pivot by a jack 15. The end of the arm has two flanges 19 formed with lugs 20, 21 in which slide rods 22, 22a, springs 25 acting to urge the rods downwardly. The lower end of the rods have journals 28, 28a received in bearings 29, 29a on the polishing head 13, and plates 31, 31a between which and the polishing head on each side of the bearings are springs 35 on studs 33 screwed into the plates and secured by nuts 34. The head 13 is of the vibrating type having a covering of abrasive material 13a secured thereto by clips 18. In operation, the spigot is rotated to rotate the spool 6, the carriage is advanced by the jack 10 and the arm 12 lowered by the jack 15 to engage the flange 6a of the spool with the abrasive material while the carriage is moved to-and-fro. In another embodiment, a plurality of carriages carrying polishing heads is disposed about the axis of the spigot.
