1275539 Grinding A W STAHLI 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 23512/71 Heading B3D A machine for grinding or lapping mutually parallel surfaces of workpieces W comprises a grinding or lapping wheel 1 having a flat top working surface, a disconnectible drive for the rotation of the wheel, dressing rings 9 having centres spaced apart around a circle and each arranged to enclose the workpieces or a set thereof, each dressing ring being peripherally supported by freely rotatable rollers 10 mounted on aromatic members 11, pressure plates arranged to lie on workpieces inside the dressing rings, a stationary table 4 having one edge adjoining the periphery of the wheel and a smooth top surface 4a flush with the top working surface la of the wheel, and means for facilitating the turning of a set of workpieces which have been pushed on to the table by a dressing ring enclosing the set. The grinding or lapping wheel 1 is secured to a supporting plate 2 rotatable by an electric motor and is cooled by liquid. The table 4 is supported by screws 5 from the frame 3 of the machine and can be slightly raised and lowered by the screws so that the workpieces can slide easily from the wheel on to the table or vice versa. During lapping, the workpieces are pressed against the wheel by pressure rings and located within the dressing rings which are supported by the rollers 10 carried by the arcuate members 11 mounted in blocks 12 so that they can be swung to an upper position enabling the dressing rings to be moved to and from the table 4. The table is formed with a recess 13 for receiving a turning plate 14 which is supported therein by a part 16 carried by adjusting screws 17, 18 from the table, the part 16 being adjusted so that its upper surface is slightly above or below the surface 4a of the table. When the wheel 1 is stopped, the rollers 10 adjacent the table 4 are raised so that the adjacent dressing ring and workpieces can be slid from the wheel across table 4 on to the turning plate 14. The dressing ring and its pressure plate are removed and a ring 22 thinner than the workpieces placed on the plate 14. A second turning plate 15 is placed over the ring and workpieces and the assembly of plates and workpieces inverted. The plate 14 and ring 22 are removed and replaced by the dressing ring for sliding movement of the workpieces from the plate 15 across table 4 on to the wheel, the process being repeated for each of the dressing rings.
