Abstract

Metals including alloys are quenched, particularly steel to stabilize the martensitic structure, by heating the metal to an elevated temperature, e.g. 830 DEG C. for steel, 870 DEG C. for ferrous alloys or 885 DEG C. for nickel, and then quenching the heated metal by plunging it into a liquid at a lower temperature, e.g. 200-220 DEG C. for mar-quenching steel, consisting of or comprising a major proportion of one or more synthetic carboxylic acid esters, such as formed by a neo-pentyl polyol and a monocarboxylic acid having a chain length of at least 5 carbon atoms and substituted at the carbon atom in the alpha-position with 2 alkyl groups, preferably so that the acid contains a total of 9-20 carbon atoms. For example, the liquid may consist of one or more tri-esters of trimethylol propane or tetra-esters of pentaerythritol. Alternatively, the liquid may comprise a diester formed by a dicarboxylic acid and a monohydric alcohol with or without a complex ester of a dicarboxylic acid, a glycol and a monohydric alcohol. The liquid may also comprise as antioxidants 0.3-2% of a phenothiazine and 3-6% of a secondary aromatic amine such as a di(alkylphenyl)amine in which the alkyl groups each contain 4-12 carbon atoms, e.g. dioctyl dihenylamine. Other antioxidants may be used such as phenyl naphthylamines. Numerous acids and alcohols are specified in the Specification. The remaining portion of the liquid, if any, may be various mineral oils or polyphenyl ethers.
