Abstract

Hydraulic fluids comprise (a) a brominated alkyl benzene of general formula <FORM:1027054/C4-C5/1> where the average value of x is 2 to 3 and R is a primary or tertiary C2-C4 alkyl group and (b) at least one carboxylic acid ester of lubricating viscosity having a boiling point of at least 220 DEG C., the composition containing at least 30% by weight of bromine and being a liquid having a viscosity of not more than 10,000 c.s. at - 65 DEG F. Esters specified are diesters derived from a C5-C12 dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic monohydric branched chain alcohol having at least 6 carbon atoms or an ester of trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol fully esterified with a C4-C10 monocarboxylic acid. The composition may contain a polymeric thickening agent having a molecular weight of less than 50,000, e.g. a polyisobutylene, an alkyl polymethacrylate or copolymer thereof with N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The composition may also contain at least one anti-oxidant, e.g. phenyl-a and b naphthylamine, 2,6-di-tertiary butyl-p-cresol, methylene bis-(2,6-di-tertiary butyl)phenol or phenothiazines. The composition may also include metal deactivators, e.g. benzotriazolo and load carrying additives, e.g. di-isopropyl phosphite or other C4-C20 dialkyl phosphites.
