Abstract

A lubricating composition, suitable for use at high and low temperatures and under extreme pressures, especially for lubricating the moving parts of the turbines of prop jet and turbo-jet aircraft, comprises a major proportion of a branched chain alcohol diester of a dicarboxylic acid and minor proportions of tricresvl phosphate and of a complex ester. The complex ester is a reaction product of compounds chosen from two or more of the following classes (subject to the proviso that at least one polyfunctional alcohol and at least one polyfunctional acid are employed):- (1) monohydric alcohols, (2) monocarboxylic acids, (3) dicarboxylic acids, (4) glycols, (5) polyhydric alcohols and (6) polycarboxylic acids. The various types of suitable complex esters are described, some of them containing sulphur. The branched chain alcohol diester is preferably a C6-C16 branched chain alcohol diester of sebacic or adipic acid and may be derived from oxo alcohols. The lubricating composition may also contain oxidation inhibitors (e.g. polynuclear phenols, alkylated phenols, phenothiazine and alkylated phenothiazine), detergents (e.g. metal salts of petroleum sulphonic acids), rust inhibitors (e.g. polyhydroxy esters such as sorbitan monooleate and pentaerythitol monooleate), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. lecithin), foam depressants (e.g. silicone fluids), mineral oil, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants and sludge dispersants. In the examples, lubricating compositions are described which consist of (a) di-C7-oxo adipate, di-C8-oxo adipate, di-C13 oxo adipate or di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate, (b) tricresyl phosphate and (c) a complex ester which is the reaction product of 2 mols of a half ester of sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol with 1 mol of a polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 200. Tests are described in which the lubricating compositions of the examples are compared with similar compositions from which one or other of the ingredients has been omitted.
