Abstract

984,720. Mould and core materials. WHITEHEAD BROS CO. March 20, 1962 [March 21, 1961; May 29, 1961 (2)], No. 10726/62. Class B3F. A green moulding sand composition comprises sand, clay, water and an additive comprising a modified starch or a starch derivative, or both, or a methyl cellulose which additive forms a gel structure in the presence of steam and hot water and is insoluble and non-adhesive in cold water. The additive may be a sodium salt of ungelatinized low-substituted starch acid ester derivative containing carboxylic and sulfonic acid groups or a cross bonded core starch of high potential viscosity which gelatinizes at 160‹-212‹ F. and is non-adhesive below 150‹ F. The composition including the modified starch or starch derivative may include a cellulosic material such as methyl cellulose, or hard or wood flours, ground flaxseed hulls, ground residue from corn cob furfural alcohol distillation or other high concentration cellulose materials the individual particles of which have been coated with a high viscosity waterproof wax or petrolactum. Other compositions include seacoal or pitch.
