Abstract
Sugar cane particles are crushed in a mill, the outlet of which is sealed against contact with air by a trough containing maceration liquid, and the resulting bagasse is discharged therefrom in a compressed state direct into the maceration liquid for expansion therein. Particles of previously comminuted sugar cane are <FORM:0984164/C6-C7/1> fed down a shoot 5 to the rollers 1, 2, 3 of a mill. Maceration liquid is fed through pipelines 22, 23 to heads 24, 25 supplying inlet holes 8, 16 in upper and lower plates 20, 21 respectively. The lower plate 21 carries a serrated sealing strip 40 which fits into corresponding grooves of the roller 3 and is held against the roller 3 by a compression spring 31 acting through an arm 30. Surplus liquid drains through a grid 33, and also through a grid 32 via a duct 34, into a receptacle 17 from which it passes through an outlet 10 and a duct 36 to a pump for recirculation to the pipelines 22, 23. The drained bagasse passes over a slide 15 for further processing and may be passed through a plurality of mill stages; each stage except the last having a liquid sealed discharge outlet. In other embodiments Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) conveying means are provided for removing the bagasse from the trough of maceration liquid.
