Abstract

394,975. Drying fibrous material. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, JONES, J. E. and JOHNSTON, D. R., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. Jan. 1, 1932, No. 46. [Class 34 (ii).] Fibrous, flaky, or granular material is dried by passing it through one or more pairs of hard surfaced pressing rolls which apply pressure to the whole of the material, which is then conducted away separately from the moisture adhering to the rolls on the delivery side thereof. The material may be, for example, cellulose acetate, which has been partly freed from water by centrifuging, and which may be subjected to an evaporation drying treatment after leaving the nip. The rolls may be solid, or may be surfaced with a suitable material such as cellulose acetate ; they may be adjustably pressed together, by means of springs, screws, or pneumatic or hydraulic means. Material carried off by the separated water may be returned to the nip. In the form shown, the material 4 is fed by a belt conveyer 5 into the nip of rolls 8, vertical side-plates 9 acting as guides. The sheet of material then passes to further pairs of rolls and is carried off on a conveyer 30. Expressed water adheres to the surfaces of the rolls 8, and runs off at the lowest points into troughs 22, rollers 23 squeezing off any residual water and leading it to the troughs. Material adhering to the rolls is scraped off by doctor blades 24 and caused to drop into the troughs, where it is conveyed by screw conveyers 26 to shoots 28 (not shown), and so to the lowest trough, from which the free water drains away, while the material is delivered to a bucket conveyer for conveyance back to the first nip. One roll 8 of each pair is formed in a block 14 slidable horizontally and is pressed towards the other roll by a hydraulic piston 15.
