Abstract

655,185. Forming pellets from sheets of thermoplastic and thermosetting materials. KRIS, R., HARRISON, A. M., and WELWYN PLASTICS, Ltd. June 22, 1948, No. 16729. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A sheet of thermosetting or thermoplastic material is passed between heated, adjustable thicknessing rollers 3, then between a circumferentially-scored, heated roller 13 and a plain roller 12 to score the sheet longitudinally, and finally between an axially-scored, cooled roller 23 and a plain roller 22, to score the sheet transversely. The scored sheet is then broken up into pellets by a rotary beating machine. Feed dogs, see Fig. 4 (not shown), are provided to prevent lateral spread of the material. Scrapers 10, 11, 21, 20 and 27 separate the material from the rollers 3, 3, 12, 13 and 22 respectively. If material sticks to the roller 23, it engages a member 28 which stops the machine. Spring-pressed plungers, see Fig. 6 (not shown), may be used for positively removing the material from the roller 23. The rollers 13 and 23 are mounted in a pivoted frame 14, to facilitate access to the scoring rollers and the material. Spring pressure between the rollers 13, 23 and 12, 22 is so adjusted by a screw 17 that the rollers do not cut right through the material.
