Abstract
A method for the continuous extraction of fats from solids comprises the steps of continuously feeding the raw material into an extraction vessel through an inlet at one of its ends and continuously discharging the material after its extraction at the other end, fresh solvent at the same time being continuously introduced at or near the latter end and being withdrawn continuously with its content of extracted substances at or near the end at which the raw material is introduced, pressing the raw material after discharge thereof from the extraction vessel for the recovery of entrained solvent, and recycling at least part of the recovered solvent to the extraction vessel near the material dis <PICT:0752367/III/1> charge end thereof at a point further away, in the direction of flow of the solvent, from the discharge outlet for the extracted material than is the point where fresh solvent is introduced into the extraction vessel. As shown, raw material, which may be pre-impregnated and pre-heated by the extract solution from conduit 25, is fed into the extraction vessel 4 by a screw 2 and travels downwardly by gravity in the reaction vessel 4 in the opposite direction to the solvent, which enters at 7, to a discharge screw 28 by which it is conveyed through valve 10 to screw 11 for discharge on to a conveyer 16. The solvent expressed by screws 28, 11 is collected in tubes 5, 12 respectively and returned via pipes 8, 9 respectively and pipe 18 to the extraction vessel 4. The extract is withdrawn from the vessel 4 via a screen 19 and outlet 20 and discharged through pipe 29, or part may be returned to impregnate and pre-heat the raw material via pipe 25 and heat exchanger 26.
