A web of material 1 having a thermoplastic surface is fed through a microwave resonator 6 where it becomes heated sufficiently to plasticize the thermoplastic surface, whereafter it is united to another web 3 by pressure. In a preferred embodiment a web 1 having a thermoplastic surface and a web 3 are passed together through a resonator cavity 6 with which is associated a microwave power unit 7 and a waveguide 8. The webs are then laminated together by passing them through the nip of a pair of press rolls 9. Alternatively, air jets may be used to press the webs together. The web 1 may be passed alone through the resonator and thereafter combined with a second material. The process may be used to join two textile webs together in which ease the thermoplastic surface is a thermoplastic adhesive applied for example by spraying as at 11, or one or both sides of a thermoplastic foam may be covered with a textile layer, the thermoplastic surface of the web itself being plasticized. The temperature to which the thermoplastic material is raised may be regulated by the provision of a substance of different di-electric coefficient e.g. iron filings on its surface.
