Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A method of forming a composite material comprises laminating a sheet of an organic fibrous substance having interstices therein with a sheet of a foamed plastics material, heating the laminate formed and subjecting the heated laminate to pressure to form a homogeneous composite material. The foamed plastics material is preferably polyurethane whilst cellulose wadding is preferably used as the organic fibrous substance, of a thickness in the range 10-30 microns. The laminating may be carried out by any known method, e.g. by melting the surface of the foam and pressing the sheet of organic fibrous substance on to the melted surface. The laminate may be subjected to pressure by passing it between calender rollers or in a press. Thereafter the laminate is heated, preferably to a temperature of 210-250‹ C. and preferably by using a gas flame. If the sheet of the fibrous substance is very thin, the lamination and interpenetration of this material can be carried out simultaneously.
