In a linear induction motor, e.g. for traction, in which a non-magnetic conducting plate passes between a pair of cores producing a travelling field, the effective resistance of the plate is increased for starting by crowding the inducing current towards one edge of the plate by moving the cores away from the centre-line of the plate towards one edge. This edge may be thinned or slotted to further circumscribe the current path. The plate may be of aluminium or an alloy thereof.
