Abstract
983,765. Stabilizing ships. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. March 3, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 7752/60. Heading B7M. [Also in Division G3] Control apparatus for operating a control surface of a craft, e.g. a ship stabilizing fin, and comprising a main actuator for rotating the control surface in response to a control quantity such as roll or pitch, includes means connected to the control surface which is adapted to store energy imparted by the fluid medium in which the craft is travelling as the control surface returns from a deflected to a neutral position and to return this energy to assist the main actuator during a subsequent deflection. Main push-pull jacks 8 operate the ship stabilizing fin 11 under the control of a variable delivery and reversing pump 6 in response to rate of roll which is signalled from a gyro 1 having an inductive pick-off, this signal driving an amplifier 2 incorporating phase advance, which controls an hydraulic valve 3 admitting fluid pressure to either side of a small jack 4 to control the pump 6, through hunting lever 5 which is connected also to the fin 11. A feedback potentiometer 12 connected to the hunting lever stabilizes the system. Auxiliary, single acting jacks 14, whose turning moment on the fin operating bar 9 increases with increasing deflection of the fin, are connected to an hydraulic accumulator 15 which stores and releases energy through the jacks 14. Pressure fluid to the valve 3, and make-up fluid supplied to the accumulator through a restriction 19, are supplied by a pump 16 through a pressure regulating and relief valve 18.
