Abstract

1287794 Automatic roll stabilisation NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Oct 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 53743/69 Heading G3R In an automatic roll stabilization system for a ship, the signal controlling a stabilizing fin below the water line is formed by several operational amplifiers from a single measurement of rolling motion. As described, signals corresponding to roll angle, velocity and acceleration produced with the aid of a number of operational amplifiers having capacitive and other feedback are added together in suitable proportions determined by adjustable potentiometers. The resultant signal controls stabilizing fins through a hydraulic follow-up servosystem involving a solenoid-operated valve and a variable delivery pump. A signal dependent on ship's 'speed, derived from a log, is applied through further operational amplifiers associated with rectifiers to produce a signal inversely proportional to the square of speed which is used to modify loop gain to compensate for the variation of fin effectiveness with speed. A fixed signal suited to the ship's speed may be substituted for the signal from the log if the latter fails. Amplifier saturation and diode limiting is employed to prevent excessive control signals. A manual selector switch may be operated to introduce a further operational amplifier which washes out the roll angle signal with a long integrating time constant so that the ship is stabilized without correction of long term list. In other positions of the manual selector switch the operational amplifiers may be arranged as an oscillator to produce roll of the ship artificially or the output of the amplifiers and the response of the fins to the oscillator signals may be checked on a built-in voltmeter which may also be used during normal roll stabilization.
