The airspeed of an aircraft is controlled by a system including an amplifier with a non-linear characteristic. In one type of arrangement, an error signal formed by comparing the set speed with the actual speed is fed into an amplifier which is more sensitive to positive signals than negative signals. This system may be used to prevent stalling during landing. In other embodiments, the amplifier gain is arranged to be greater for large error signals, in order than "hunting"should be avoided. This may be done by using a multiplier, to one input of which the error signal is fed, and to the other input there is applied the sum of the error and a constant signal. Threshold and limiting circuits may also be included. The airspeed may be measured as a function of the velocity head or angle of attack.
